Enter on corner of Temple & Westlake, go through the open gate and
there will be parking on your left and right. You may park in front
of the yellow railings (they just don't have spaces marked off)
The entrance to the Factory is to your right, opposite the picnic tables
and pop-up tents.
The checklist for camp is attached and also available to download
online.
Please make sure your daughters are not wearing any type of jewelry
during camp.
We will also be doing a check. Any ear piercings can be covered with
medical tape if you prefer.
Rings, necklaces, bracelets,anklets,etc are not permitted.
As well as belts with sharp objects or loose belts.

in the L.A. Derby Dolls (LADD) Roller Derby Camp. We are excited to
be able to offer this unique opportunity to girls from all communities
within Los Angeles and beyond. Please read the following pages to answer
questions you may have about the program. If this does not address your

Q: Who are the L.A.
Derby Dolls?
A: Founded in 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls are the premiere all-female,
banked-track, quad-skating rock 'n' roller derby league in the Southern
California area. Completely volunteer-run and organized by the skaters,
for the skaters, the L.A. Derby Dolls highlight the do-it-yourself spirit
in a new generation of roller derby. Since moving to Historic Filipinotown
near downtown Los Angeles in late 2007, the L.A. Derby Dolls have sold
out every single monthly game at a capacity of more than 1,700 fans.
Nationally recognized, the LADD were recently featured in the Los Angeles

Q: What is the purpose
of this camp?
A: The LADD Roller Derby Camp’s goal is to create a positive and
safe environment for girls ages 9-17 to develop athletic abilities,
build self-confidence, leadership skills, teamwork and improve overall
fitness while playing the sport of roller derby, the fastest growing
sport for women in the nation.
Q: Where is the camp
held?
A: At the Doll Factory in Historic Filipinotown on 1910 W. Temple St.
Los Angeles, CA 90026.
Q: What are the
dates and times of camp?
A: Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24th from 9AM-3PM. We will also
offer Extended Hours (non-training) to the campers from 8AM-9AM and
3PM-6PM each day for parents who are not able to pick up their children
during work hours.
Q: What are the ages
of the girl campers?
A: 8-17 years old.
Q: Are girls from
out-of-state able to attend camp?
A: Yes, if they register in time and if there are still spaces available.
Q: Will accommodations
be made for out-of-state campers?
A: Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodations but we can make recommendations
on affordable hotels in the area.
Q: How many campers
will be attending during the week?
A: There will be a maximum of 60 campers per day. No camper can attend
only one or 2 days; they must attend for the full week.
Q: How many trainers
will be coaching during camp?
A: There will be at least 1 trainer for every 10 campers per day. In
addition, trainers will have assistant trainers and volunteers who run
off-skate classes (arts and crafts, punk rope, etc).
Q: Will the girls
be divided by age group?
A: Yes, all girls will be divided by age group as well as skill level.
Q: Are the trainers
certified instructors?
A: Several trainers are professional teachers and instructors and all
trainers are certified with the L.A. Derby Dolls.
Q: Will there be
medics on staff?
A: Although there will not be medics on staff, there will be CPR-certified
trainers who are skilled in first aid.
Q: How rigorous
will the physical activities be?
A: To offer the best experience possible for girls to learn athletic
abilities, physical activities will be taking place throughout the week.
Though there is no pre-requisite for the Camp, all girls should be physically
fit and capable of enduring activities such as roller skating, running
and jumping.
Q: Is this a full
contact sport?
A: While roller derby is a full contact sport, the L.A. Roller Derby
Camp will feature obstruction, not destruction. Girls will not be allowed
to hit one another on or off the track. The camp will follow the rules
of the Junior Roller Derby Association which does not allow hard hitting
(please see Junior Roller Derby Association rules on the Web site).
Referees and trainers will fully enforce these rules.
Q: What will the
week entail?
A: Each day will consist of on and off track activities including: skating
basics, punk rope classes, arts & crafts (decorating helmets and
t-shirts, etc), skill tests, non-skating exercises and lunch break.
Day 5 – Friday will feature a scrimmage for the campers to showcase
their skills for their friends and family. Capacity will be limited
and parents can sign up to attend on the first day of camp.
Q: Will the parents
& campers be able to meet the L.A. Derby Dolls before camp?
A: Yes, we are planning on having an Open House at the Doll Factory.
Date TBA. This is for the parents and children to see
the Doll Factory and meet the trainers and volunteers.
Q: Will there be
scholarships available?
A: A limited number of scholarships will be available. Please email
if you are interested.
Q: Are food and water
provided?
A: Although light snacks and water will be provided, all campers should
bring a full lunch and sports drinks or water.
Q: What equipment
will I need to purchase?
A: All camp attendees must have quad roller skates (no inline skates/”rollerblades”
are allowed), knee pads, wrist guards, elbow pads, mouth guard and a
helmet. There will be a limited number of some equipment available (though
no mouth guards) to borrow.
Valley Surf and Skate will be offering 15% discounts on equipment at
the orientation on July 12. Otherwise, parents can receive a 10% discount
at the store after the orientation.
Equipment can be also purchased at any local sporting goods store (Sports
Chalet, Big 5), skateboard shop (L.A. Skate Company) or online at LowPriceSkates,
SinCitySkates.com, ViaDerby.com or RollerDerbyDepot.com.
Q: What is the dress
code?
A: Campers should dress comfortably in apparel that enables athletic
activities (i.e. jeans or flip flops are not recommended). All campers
should also bring their athletic shoes/sneakers.
Q: Are spectators,
including parents, allowed to watch any of the practice sessions?
A: In order to create a comfortable and relaxed environment, we are
not allowing parents, family members or friends to attend practice sessions.
We will be featuring a scrimmage for family members to attend on the
last day of Camp on Friday, July 24. Due to city codes, we will have
a limited capacity for the scrimmage. Parents can sign up for a spot
to view the scrimmage on the first day of camp
Q: What is the cost
for the extended daycare?
A: The extended daycare cost per day is $5 for early drop off (8-9AM),
$5 for late pick up (3-5PM), and $10/hr after 5PM.
Q: Will my child
need insurance?
A: All camp attendees are required to sign up for insurance through
USA Roller Sports (USARS). USARS is the governing body for competitive
roller sports. We have negotiated a special Camp insurance cost of $20.

Q: What are the other
check-in requirements?
A: Parents will need to provide names, relationships and telephone numbers
for clearance to sign their child in and out of camp every day.
