BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME:

Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition affecting all ethnicities and economic groups. Down syndrome is found approximately once in every 691 births. Individuals with Down syndrome have an extra copy of the 21st chromosome (Trisomy 21), which causes physical differences and disabilities. Most people with Down syndrome live a rich and productive life thanks to organizations like the DSALA, which has been providing services for more than 35 years to the Greater Los Angeles Area.

ABOUT TWENTYWONDER:

“TWENTYWONDER is the cause-driven cousin of SuperBalls 1-8. The recipe of TWENTYWONDER is easy: take a soulful collection of 100 plus creators, supporters, builders, entertainers, friends and volunteers who've been gathering for years in the name of SuperBall, create a new name derived from the medical term Trisomy 21(Down syndrome), expand the fan base to new and far-reaching sectors of society, then bring it all together for a One-Night World's Fair event to raise support and awareness for those born with Down syndrome living in the Greater Los Angeles area,” said Jim Hodgson, Director of Administration and Development, DSALA. The inaugural fundraising event TWENTYWONDER began in 2010.

Last year’s sold-out TWENTYWONDER event raised over $100,000 with the proceeds helping to support DSALA’s various programs offered to nearly 4,200 individuals with Down syndrome living in Los Angeles. Programs include: sport activities in Koreatown, El Segundo, San Fernando Valley, Family Support Network in South Los Angeles, yoga classes for teens and babies at the DSALA Community Center, music and art programs dotted around the city for individuals between the ages of 3 – 42, Saturday seminars with topics from potty training to independent living and outreach programs to hospitals.

ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF LOS ANGELES (DSALA):

The Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles (DSALA) was started over thirty-five years ago by fifteen forward-thinking parents of children born with Down syndrome. In an era when society's predominant response to individuals with Down syndrome was to place them in institutions, these pioneers stood up for what is right, took control, and opened up the dialog that all grateful new parents in the Down syndrome/Trisomy 21 community are advancing today. DSALA offers information, guidance and programming designed to assist parents and families who have a family member with Down syndrome. Part of DSALA’s mission is to educate and enlighten a wider community to fully understand that everyone deserves respect, inclusion and that “we are more alike than different.”

Los Angeles –The L.A. Ri-Ettes have had an explosive 2012 season on the bank track skating against some of the strongest and fastest skaters in the nation from teams like Colorado Springs Team Bionic, New York City’s Gotham Girls and San Diego's Wildfires. On Saturday, June 16th, The L.A. Ri-Ettes will now face off against Seattle's premier flat track derby league, The Rat City Rollergirls. Rat City got rolling in 2004 becoming the first flat track league in the North West and will be bringing their “all-star” skaters to the Doll Factory in order to do battle on the banked track. Will Seattle’s flat track skills be enough to bring Los Angeles down or will the Ri-Ettes’ banked track experience have them skating circles around Rat City? Join us Saturday evening to find out.

The Derby Dolls are also happy to announce that all games for the 2012 season are open to all ages, but please note that all Saturday evening games are “PG-13” rated so parental guidance is suggested. Alcohol sales remain open for 21+ guests who will be issued an alcohol wristband at the door with a valid ID. Small personal cameras (pocket-size, point and shoot only) are now allowed into the Doll Factory, so come and take pictures of your favorite skaters or with them after the bout!
About the L.A. Derby Dolls:

Founded in 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls (www.derbydolls.com/la) are Southern California’s premiere women’s banked-track, quad-skating, roller derby league. Within the league, four fierce teams battle for dominance: Fight Crew, Sirens, Tough Cookies and Varsity Brawlers. The L.A. Ri-Ettes are L.A. Derby Doll’s all-star team that competes on a national level against the best of the best in the country. While their uniforms may be stylish and their names playful, do not be fooled by appearances – the L.A. Derby Dolls are athletes who skate a sport that is unscripted and real. Honored as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association, the L.A. Derby Dolls embody the do-it-yourself, “for the skaters, by the skaters” ethos of modern women’s roller derby.

The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only thirteen leagues in the U.S. playing roller derby on a banked track. Like most modern female roller derby leagues, the Derby Dolls are volunteer-run and give back to the community that has embraced them. The league also operates the Junior Derby Dolls for girls ages 8-17.

The Tough Cookies winning streak came to a dramatic end last year when the once undefeatable team placed at the bottom of the league rankings. With new members, tough training and a burning desire to win, the scouts have been earning patches to once again reclaim the top spot. The Sirens started the 2012 season with an impressive win, beating the Fight Crew by 143 points, proving that they do not plan on giving up that champs title. Will the Tough Cookies make an arresting impact on the track, or will the ladies in blue leave crumbs on the track and skate away with another win? Let the battle begin!

Join the fun at the Doll Factory, the home of the Derby Dolls located in Historic Filipinotown. Reminder: No photographers are allowed to shoot from the pink track-side walkways at any time. Any large DSLR type cameras that require a camera bag or have interchangeable lenses are strictly prohibited for personal fan use and will be turned away. All professional cameras and equipment will remain for press outlets only.

L.A. Derby Dolls events also offer a full range of entertainment off the track in the Vendor Village with live musical entertainment at halftime, vendors selling art, jewelry and clothes; food from Garage Pizza and a variety of other food trucks onsite; and various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage choices. The L.A. Derby Dolls are proud to be sponsored by Jack Daniel’s and Pabst Blue Ribbon. JD ready-to-drink bottles, along with PBR beer and various wines will be served up by Alex’s Bar. Stila cosmetics will be at all games treating our fans to complimentary beauty products, and the S-One Helmet Company will be protecting our skaters.
