Another sellout crowd packed the Doll Factory for the opening bout of the LA Derby Dolls 2010 season and even though several skaters got booted from the rink, the crowd stayed on its feet throughout the 60-minute, banked-track battle.

Derby Dolls to battle L.A. firefighters in charity event

Members of the L.A. Derby Dolls will battle it out on the ice Thursday against a team from the Los Angeles Fire Department in a charity broomball game. 

The match begins at 9 a.m. at the outdoor ice rink at Pershing Square. Proceeds will benefit the Fireman Relief Assn.'s Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen's Fund, according to the department.

The Dolls are among the best known of the more than 200 roller derby leagues that have operated across the country in recent years. They will be facing off against of team of firefighters from Station 9 downtown and other firehouses.

Broomball Game at Pershing Square Ends in 17-7 Victory

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles firefighters swept away the competition yesterday at Pershing Square as they pounded the L.A. Derby Dolls in a game of broomball.

The hour-long game took place at Downtown on Ice and ended with a score of 17-7 in favor of the firefighters. The game was a fundraiser to benefit the LAFD Widows, Orphan and Disabled Fireman’s Fun.
