DERBY 101

THE PLAYERS

Up to 5 players from each team skate the track in each 60 second JAM. Players are rotated between each JAM.

THE GAME

Up to 5 players from each team skate the track in each 60 second JAM. Players are rotated between each JAM. Banked track roller derby is a full-contact sport played on roller skates. Players must skate counter clockwise and must not stop on the track. A bout consists of 4-15 minutes quarters, comprised of 60 second scoring periods called JAMS. Jams start on the first whistle. The jam ends at 60 seconds or when the "lead jammer" puts her hands on her hips to call off the jam. Points will not be earned after the first whistle ending the jam. Jammers race each other around the track, trying to score as many points as possible per jam.

SCORING

Points are scored by the jammer of each team. After clearing the pack the first time, the jammer earns 1 point each time they lap an opposing skater. Players who are in the penalty box become ghost points, and a jammer will earn 1 point per scoring pass for each ghost point. The opposing jammer also becomes a point if she fails to make it out of the pack. Both team's jammers can score simultaneously. Watch the scoreboard!

PENALTIES

Illegal moves result in penalties. When a skater incurs a penalty they are sent to the penalty box for the duration of the following jam. When a skater is in the box, her team will be penalized and must skate minus a player. If the player sits for 7 penalty points, she is ejected from the game.
